We are gratified that the culture of fljx is becoming an cbjcci of in*cre->t among the agriculturists in our country, paiticularly in itic eastern tutrs, T e i:npoitan'-e of the article tor domestic consumption, and the immense sums i.nnually sent ou> of the country for the various linen manufactures, both 140 to show l lie necessity of much greater at j tenuon to the subjcct than it has hereto fore gained anion c out farmers. Although large quantities of flsx arc always raised in our country, we stiil import a vast proportion of the linen* t'lat are used ? but it is believed, that if we paid suitable attention to the culture , aa/1 atiei wards to the preparation, of thi? f.jx nccessaiy even lor ihr finest manu factures. wc might, at no distant per 100, wotk. up toe raw maicual to great pio tit, and retain in tne couhti y a large proportion ot the money that i> now sent abroad fur foreign linen tnauutaciun v One great difficult) in the way 010111? c.iuntrymen in ti.e ust of ri?x for fine fabrics, hus been, ihe want of antfticiei.: mode of preparing ii for that purpose The practice ot rotting flax in waier 01 dew, is neccssaiiiv attendeu with much hazard and labour; and the beauty of it i? always impaired by that mode of pre paration. We ate much gratified ai be in? able, to state, that a machine has been invented in tl.is city, wnir.h, as far as w?j are ai.lc to judge from our own observation, and the opinions of a num ber of highly respectable gentlemen, will iuliy remove the difliruhies that have hitherto existed with regard to ii, and aihWer ail the j-yrposes that the in* venter had in View, or the f-tmer ctn desire. The inventor of ihia machine is An thony Dcy. assisted in his operation by Mr. J jmr-s Mc Donald, !*olh of thi* city ? Mr. Di-y raised the past season 6.) acres of flax on reclaimed salt-marsh land in New-Jersey. As it w ould be im possible, wuhoui incurring Rical ex pense, to procure this large quantity ot llax t!rc?v i in the usual manner, and not being able to obtain the machines in use in (>rrat-Briiain, he undertook to form one lor his own use, and we think he has succeeded in an uncommon degree. This machine is intruded to be moved by animal or water p'>wer ? it drett&e* flax and hemp in an unioited s'ate, and of course saves all the expense and evils of rotting ? and it is supposed, when mo ved by a power equal to that of a yi.ke of oxen, Wi.l dress a ton of fl^x in a d.?y. I s operations are such that i' w ill car ry through the machine thrae lengths of IIjx m a minute; and its , rrtoirn ance is so perfcci, that the flax is com pletely broke and dressed. After having passed thrcug:* the machine, it is to he boiled in a inanne* peifectly within th? pow er of every farmer; and whenhoikd and finished, it is left in the finest order. We have a sample at thi-.lt >fll ??, which in point of cumpnxioh, fineness arci softness ot fibre, is vciy lime inferior to fine floss silk. It is certainly very far su perior in every rcspect to any flax tba; we have, ever %ten dressed in our coun tneir arest.
